02 Dec 25 DAYS OF DECEMBERS – DAY 2 HOMEMADE VEGAN SWEETS
Homemade vegan sweets recipe
This is a very simple one that we learnt from our old French colleague Julian.
Apparently they are very traditional in France – very traditional flavours here too.
These are called ‘Dattes fourrées à la pâte d’amande’ or ‘dates stuffed with marzipan’. We absolutely can’t pronounce the french name without Julian here. We have mortified ourselves with our language skills. Apart from Jo. Jo can speak Spanish.
It makes a really lovely homemade vegan present, if you get the ingredients it’s the kind of thing you can all sit around the table doing. Child friendly as well.
All you do is get some mejool dates, make a cut along the top and remove the stone, and work a bit of marzipan between your fingers. You can then fill the date with an olive sized piece of marzipan and squeeze it gently together.
Some people like to dip the date in caster sugar for an extra Christmas effect but we’re know we’re already in diabetes central here so up to you!
Melting some vegan chocolate and half dipping them, and then covering them with chopped nuts or desiccated coconut would be really nice as well.
Using ethical vegan food colourings you can even make them bright Christmas colours – though we like some to be pink, some green, and some left normal coloured.
You can also flavour these with orange blossom or rose water.
If you buy a small box from somewhere like Lakelands (you can reuse these afterwards to save on waste) and layer these up they look amazing.
Tis the season!
