Suzy Oakes
During the all too brief time we knew her, Suzy was an incredible support to our little shop: always with something positive and insightful to say; always of benefit, and always with a huge, beautiful glowing smile on her face.
Obviously, she is best known to people in this area as a major contributor to the Mill Road Winter Fair. Since her involvement with the fair it has blossomed into the major event of the winter calendar. Her driving ambition was to see local businesses receive a boost, but more than that, to celebrate the sheer diversity and range of businesses on this very special road. Her energy and tenacity was deeply inspiring and greatly appreciated by all who came into contact with her. As a local business ourselves we cannot express how grateful we are to her friendship and encouragement. Thanks to Suzy, and all the other kindly people who volunteer their time, the winter fair has become our busiest selling day of the year, and also one of the most fun.
Suzy had so many ideas, talents and achievements it is impossible to list them all here (please go to the Cambridge Evening News obituary of Wednesday 3rd August for more details). She was a tremendous photographer, particularly of food which she collated in the form of a calendar including images from the world over. She also created what am I eating.com an ingenious website designed to aide mystified restaurant diners when faced with ingredients they’d never before heard of; famous chef, Rick Stein was known to be a passionate advocate.
Generous in spirit and incredibly kind hearted, we will miss her deeply.
Suzy Oakes, rest in peace.
